When it comes to retail, lighting is one of the most important things to consider. Not only does it affect the look of the products on sale, but it also influences the shopper’s mood and buying patterns. Another important factor is the cost of lighting, given that retail stores are open long hours, and therefore use up a lot of energy, which can be very expensive.

Cost savings

LEDs are the most energy-efficient choice when it comes to lighting and the bigger your store, the more savings you’ll make. The reason that LED lights are more energy efficient is because 95% of the energy they contain is converted into light with only 5% wasted as heat. Halogen spotlights are only 30% efficient with 70% of the energy used to power it given off in the form of heat. LEDs will generally last you about 10 times longer than a halogen bulb, making them a good investment for the future of your retail outlet.

Customer shopping habits

As well as cost saving, choosing LEDs for your store can do a lot more than just cut your energy bills. With LED lighting panels, you can choose the colour temperature of the lights. Daylight and Cool White would be the best colour choices for most retail stores - this brightness of these lights have been shown to make people feel more awake, lifting their mood and could make them stay longer as they won’t have a rushed, urgency to leave as tired people can have. It can also boost the happiness of your staff resulting in more productivity and an increased chance of sales.

Lighting quality

If you are retailing clothes or jewellery, then the colour of the light is even more important – a cool white LED light will show the true colours of the clothes and will produce the best sparkle from your jewellery too. Compared to other lighting types, LED panels provide a better quality of light and have a high Colour Rendering Index (CRI) which means they are better for seeing the true colours of objects. Research has also shown that lights with a high CRI cast a more flattering light making customers feel better in the clothes/jewellery/make-up.

It is important to make a great first impression on customers when they enter your store, so by using LED panels to make it as light and inviting as possible, you are more likely to attract customers, as well as making them stay longer in store, and hopefully attracting them to make a purchase and return in the future.
