LED Lights Illuminate Sir John Barrow Monument
To illuminate the Sir John Barrow monument in Ulverston, LED panel lights were installed on Hoad Hill.
The colourful lighting, which was funded by Ulverston Business Improvement District, was fitted around the base of the 100-ft limestone tower, the West Morland Gazette reported.
After tests were carried out on the eight LED light ‘pods’ in March, they were recently fitted at the Grade II listed site before the illumination officially launches on Saturday (September 17th).
This will coincide with the Lantern Festival, taking place on the same day, to attract as much public attention as possible.
Ulverston town mayor councillor Mark Wilson told the newspaper: “The new technology will enable us to change lighting colours for special occasions or to meet requests, and it will all be programmed via an internet connection, so it will no longer be necessary to trek up Hoad every time we want to use the lights.”
He added that as the monument is such an important landmark in the town, it will be “wonderful” to see it lit up to highlight its full glory.
Earlier this summer, the local authority said there was such a fantastic response to the lighting tests that it decided to install three extra lights for £22,352, bringing the total up to eight.
The lamps are set below the ground and covered with non-slip glass so visitors will not trip over them when viewing the tower.
The 165-year-old lighthouse was originally constructed to commemorate Ulverston’s Sir John Barrow, who was once secretary to the British Admiralty.
